Some days the garden can be a comical place.
Today was the squirrel/gator stand-off.
At first it looks as if the gator will be easily victorious.
But then the squirrel takes a brave stand.
In the end the squirrel slays the gator and reminds us all the the little guy can win!

April 16th, Tulips in bloom!

Today in the garden the tulips are in bloom! The sun is finally shining after days and days of rain. Things are getting colorful now!

Don't forget to plant all those flowers that you received for Easter! This is what you will reap next spring in "your" garden:)

April treasures, the "Praying Mantis Cocoon"

This time of year you have to be careful that you don't get carried away with weeding and cleaning out your garden. Hidden treasures are amongst the debris.

Today in the garden I found a "Praying Mantis" cocoon which is actually called an ootheca. They are made of a "frothy mass" which hardens and depending on the species these can be attached to a flat surface, wrapped around a plant or even deposited in the ground.

I consider the Praying Mantis a treasure because they are predators and their prey is insects! Therefore they eat all those nasty insects that eat my plants.

Many gardeners consider mantises to be desirable insects, as they prey upon many harmful insect species. Organic gardeners who avoid pesticides may encourage mantises as a form of biological pest control. Tens of thousands of mantis egg cases are sold each year in some garden stores for this purpose.

I am attaching some photos of just a few of the cocoons that I found. Keep your eyes out in your garden for your own!
